As soon as the cold weather arrives, its almost always accompanied by sniffly noses and sore throats. But don't worry because we're here to share some unusual but effective methods to get rid of a cold or a cough. Marshmallow root is a herb that has been historically used to soothe sore throats and can be used by making it into a tea. But did you know that marshmallows are also soothing? The gelatin coating and soft form helps calm itchy irritated throats. Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain which is an anti inflammatory for you respiratory system and also helps your body break up mucus and get rid of it faster. So drinking some pineapple juice when you have a bad cough may be comforting to you. Just cut a clove of garlic in half lengthways and then bite down on a piece of it for 10-15 minutes. We know raw garlic can taste very unpleasant but its also an incredible bacteria fighter and will help cure you sooner. Thyme helps relax the muscles in your throat that cause coughing. Just steep 2 tsp of thyme in some boiling water for about 10 minutes and then add in some honey and lemon for the perfect cold curing tea.
Make your own cough syrup by mixing together half a tsp of honey with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of cinnamon. Take this mixture twice a day and before sleeping as it will help soothe your sore throat and provide some much needed cough relief. Add 2-3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into a bowl of steaming hot water and then hold your head over it and use a towel to trap the steam.
The menthol in the eucalyptus oil combined with the steam will help decongest your stuffy nose and chest in an instant. Vitamin C is known to boost immunity and fight bacteria so if you feel yourself starting to get sick, take a 500mg tablet of vitaminC 3-4 times a day to make sure that your body is able to fight away the germs. Zinc helps reduce the possibility of a cold or cough and also helps reduce the duration of it. To get the most out of this incredible mineral you can take cough drops or lozenges that contain zinc as one of its ingredients. Echinacea is a flower extract that has often been used to treat colds and coughs. This ingredient can be expensive but its extremely effective.
You can take it in the form of a tea, capsule or even concentrated oil drops directly into your mouth.
